Goals and Objectives
 

 

 

 

Sustainable Erie is a Colorado non-profit corporation dedicated to improving the livability of the Erie planning area.  It's formation and major objectives are a direct result of the community driven Erie Stakeholder Assessment Process (January-July 2001) completed in partnership with the Town of Erie. 

Our Goals

bulletGain support for RTD service from Erie, Fredrick, and Dacono.

bulletInitiate sustainable development program
bulletAchieve a 50% reduction in Erie’s per capita landfill waste-stream by 2008

 

Our Objectives

1         Objectives

Major objectives were determined and approved thru the Erie Stakeholder Assessment Process (January-July 2001).  Additional objectives were identified by the board of Sustainable Erie.

 

1.1       Transportation Objectives

1.1.1       Routes for alternative modes of transportation 

Identify routes for alternative transportation and barriers to the use of alternative transportation (ESAP Transportation Strategy 1.3).

1.1.2       RTD service for all of Erie 

In conjunction with local governments, chambers of commerce, and RTD, establish adequate RTD Service for both the Boulder and Weld portions of Erie.  (ESAP Transportation Strategy 1.4).

1.1.3       Efficient Transportation Systems

Combine efforts with the Town, businesses, citizens, and governmental agencies, to support development and maintenance of transportation systems that accommodate:

    bulletThe disabled
    bulletThe elderly
    bulletThe young
    bulletPedestrians
    bulletMass transit
    bulletAlternative modes

 

1.2       Pollution/Waste Reduction

1.2.1       Collection of recyclables at all Town facilities and events

Combine efforts with the Town, to provide recycling at all Town Facilities and Events.  (ESAP Environmental Strategy 1.2).

1.2.2       Recycling/Reuse Programs

Develop programs to encourage reuse and recycling.  Programs will include:

    bulletComposting
    bulletDealing with household waste
    bulletDealing with construction waste
    bulletUsing gray waster
    bulletReuse of waste items

1.2.3       Outdoor Lighting Ordinance

Assist the Town to draft and adopt an ordinance to minimize light pollution and maximize energy conservation by reducing electricity wasted though inefficient lighting.

1.2.4       Resource Efficiency 

Examine establishment of resource efficiency requirements for facilities owned or leased by the Town of Erie.

 

1.3       Hazard Identification/Reduction

1.3.1       Identification of potential hazards

Combine efforts with the Town, to identify potential hazards that affect the Erie Planning Area. Hazards and associated risks need to be assessed and mitigation prioritized.  (ESAP Environmental Strategy 1.3)

 

1.4       Ecological Awareness

1.4.1       Establish sustainable indicators

Combine efforts with the Town, Boulder County and Weld County to develop Sustainable Indicators.  (ESAP Environmental Strategy 1.4)

1.4.2       Support for the Environment

Develop programs that encourage the community to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle.  Programs will include:

    bulletIdentification of alternatives to activities that damage the environment. 
    bulletEducation about the ecology of the planning area.
    bulletImpacts of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) on the ecology of the planning area.

 

1.5       Diversity

1.5.1       Affordable Housing

Organize and support efforts to preserve and provide housing opportunities that promote an economically diverse community.

 

1.6       Development

1.6.1       Standards for Sustainable Development

Promote sustainable development through advisory consultation with town staff and Erie’s Board of Trustees.

1.6.2       Green Building Standards

Encourage the incorporation of environmentally friendly site development and construction standards in the Town’s building code.

1.6.3       Adequate Public Facilities Requirements

Assist the Town to draft and adopt an APF ordinance that will permit approval of development projects only when it has been determined that public facilities will be adequate to support and service the proposed development.
